Man Drives To E.R. After Being Shot In The Foot

Bethel Towers receives fire extinguishers

Fire safety got a boost Wednesday at Costa Mesa’s Bethel Towers, when city officials thanked Ace Hardware and the Costa Mesa Community Foundation for fire extinguishers that will go in residents’ apartments. The high-rise senior apartment complex was built in 1966 before sprinklers were required, and it didn’t have extinguishers for each of the building’s 270 units until this week.

Students invited to learn about military academies

An informational event on U.S. military academies is scheduled tonight at Sage Hill School in Newport Coast, hosted by Newport Beach Rep. John Campbell. High schoolers can learn about the U.S. Air Force, the Coast Guard, the Merchant Marines, military and naval academies.

Boy Scouts honor Newport mayor, retired developer

Two Newport Beach residents were honored by the Orange County Boy Scouts as role models who demonstrate the tenets of scouting. Newport Beach Mayor Steve Rosansky and retired real estate developer Jeff Elghanayan were named men of character at an event last week at the Disneyland Hotel.

Alleged Drunk Driver Critically Smashes Another

A 21-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence after he collided with another driver also suspected of DUI, police said.

Michael Escobedo was driving northbound on Placentia Avenue about 1:30 a.m. Sunday when he broadsided a vehicle traveling westbound on 19th Street, said Costa Mesa police Sgt. Keith Davies.

The driver of the other vehicle, Pedro Martinez, 26, of Costa Mesa was hospitalized in critical, but stable condition at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. Read more
