South Coast Repertory
South Coast Repertory is a professional resident theater, founded in 1964 by David Emmes and Martin Benson, who continue to serve as artistic directors. The Orange County, California, theater offers a ten-month season — September through June — of 11 plays on two stages (the 507-seat Segerstrom Stage and the 336-seat Julianne Argyros Stage) as well as a variety of outreach and educational programs. Both stages are located in SCR’s Folino Theatre Center, which just opened after a $19 million renovation to SCR’s 24-year-old Costa Mesa facility. Plays presented are either premieres of important plays by America’s finest playwrights (many of them developed at SCR), or plays drawn from the classic and modern theater repertoires.
South Coast Repertory receives regular recognition from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and Drama-Logue Magazine for many years. In 2000, South Coast Repertory won its fifth Ted Schmitt Award, given annually to the best production of a world premiere, for Amy Freed’s The Beard of Avon. It won the coveted Tony Award for Distinguished Achievement in 1988, and its artistic directors received Lifetime Achievement Awards in 1995.
Play readings and workshops are an integral part of South Coast Repertory’s season. In addition to regular in-house play readings which allow the theater’s artistic staff to monitor the progress of new work, the NewSCRipts Series of five public play readings has brought the audience into the process since 1986. Of the first 55 plays read in the series, 80% have gone on to production at South Coast Repertory or elsewhere.
